Rob and Julie have been busy tasting bottle after bottle over the past few weeks to find some great new wines for our shop in Conwy. It's a dirty job but someone has to do it!
There’s loads of new wines coming in and the first batch of ten have arrived and are on our shiny new shelves (if you haven’t been in for a while we have had a complete refit!)
Here’s a rundown of the new wines, in no particular order as they are all crackers!
Domaine FL 2008, Chenin Blanc, Anjou-Saumur, Loire, France
The Loire is home to the world’s greatest chenin blanc wines and this excellent new addition to our range is the perfect expression of this lovely grape. We love the aroma of peach and lime. On the palate it's fleshy, with green apple characters and a lively acidity. The wine is organic. Producer Domaine FL is also committed to biodynamic production.
Flor de Vetus Verdejo 2011, Rueda, Spain
Rueda is the home of Verdejo, a grape that makes delightfully soft and aromatic white wine.
This is a really well balanced wine, delicate and complex. On the nose it offers rich citrus and peach fruit characters. The tropical notes on the palate are balanced by a bright acidity leading to a long and refreshing finish.
L'expressio del Priorat 2010, Mas La Mola, Priorat, Catalunya, Spain
Priorat is famous for its world class, complex wines using grapes best known in the Rhone and southern France. This is an interesting twist – a wine that captures the majesty of the region but is ready to drink much younger thanks to a blend of oaked and unoaked Grenache, Carignan and other varieties.
The result is a very approachable wine with a silky texture and juicy smooth tannins...and it can even be enjoyed slightly chilled.
Cazes Le Canon du Marechal 2011, Roussillon, France
Domaine Cazes is the largest certified organic and biodynamic estate in France. It's also the sunniest area of France, giving very ripe grapes. This is a blend of 85% muscat and 15% viognier. There's a lovely freshness and minerality to this fleshy wine. A real cracker.
Vesevo Greco di Tufo 2011, Campania, Italy
This delightful grape was nearly extinct – thank goodness it’s been saved!
There's an intense aroma of pears, honey and almond. On the palate you will discover stone fruit flavours, a crisp, mineral character and good body.
Yealands Riesling 2011, Marlborough, New Zealand
Aroma: Citrus with a hint of elderflower. Taste: citrus zest and lush mid palate weight balanced beautifully with focused acidity on the finish
Ata Rangi Crimson Pinot Noir 2010, Martinborough, New Zealand
This was named in Decanter Magazine’s top 50 New World pinot noirs – supple, complex and delicious. Martinborough and Otago are producing wines that are in the same class as many big name Burgundies.
Domaine Mongeard-Mugnerèt, 2009 Vosne Romanee 1er Cru Les Orveaux
This a world-class wine, one of the great Burgundies. It offers silky smooth tannins, ripe, approachable summer berry fruit and a long, fragrant spiced finish. It's one for laying down and will be ready to drink by next year but will continue to develop for five to 10 years - if you can wait that long.
Chateau La Lagune 2007 Haut Medoc Grand Cru Classe
This a third growth wine from the the fabled classification of Haut Medoc grand crus and one Mr Parker has singled out for praise. It is balanced to perfection and silky smooth. We just had to list it!
It's ready now and good for a decade and more.
Dobogo 06 Tokaji Aszu 6 Puttonyos
Thank you Hungary for this dreamy dessert wine. Not cheap but what a treat. Aromas of fragrant flowers with honey and dried fruits. On the palate you will find apricot, citrus peel and fig . The long sweet finish is balanced by refreshing acidity.
